To Scrub or Not to Scrub? That IS the question! – Lara Welch

Skin Myth: Is an exfoliating scrub the most effective remover of dead skin cells if you are breakout prone?

Julia Roberts! The actress has the softest, smoothest, silkiest skin I have ever seen. Her radiating, glowing skin sucks you into her seductive smiling ad for Lancôme. You know you’d be smiling like her too with such elegant, delicate skin! What woman wouldn’t?

I used to pass Julia’s fantastic, flawless face every morning in Madrid’s metro on my way to work. Every woman seemed to be gazing longingly at Julia, green with envy. Envy indeed!  Except I was green with sickness that in my twenties I still actively struggle with acne!  So, seeing Julia Roberts everyday made me wonder: What IS her exfoliating secret?

I went on a mad hunt for the perfect exfoliator. I thought the solution to suave skin was simple, of course! Going back to the basic rule of skin care; removing dead skin cells generates the production of new skin cells for a flawless face! Ten exfoliators and eight months later, my face still looked red, lumpy, flakey, and unhealthy. The more pimples that appeared the more I exfoliated and the harder I rubbed. I rubbed until my skin was dry and raw. The effects were… well, frankly….HORRIFING!

So, as an extremely vain, beauty lover I figured that there was no problem that couldn’t be solved without the help of a new product! I went straight into every perfume shop in Madrid asking about redness, environmental affects, synthetic beads, and nut exfoliators. Do you know what I found?

Myth: Bead and nuts are the best exfoliators to generate new skin cell growth!

Truth: Bead and nut exfoliators pick up bacteria from pimples and daily life, then drags them sprawling across your face.

To scrub or not to scrub?? : Absolutely DO NOT scrub, use an exfoliating cream!

Ever had a huge red pimple that finally starts going away, but before it’s totally gone another pimple appears in the same vicinity? Well, unfortunately for you, the bacteria loved your bead exfoliator so much that it clung to it, and jumped over a couple of centimeters to invade uninfected skin! What a nightmare, right?!

The good news ladies, is that there is a solution! Use an acid exfoliating cream at night! Why? Because the acid exfoliates the skin on the spot, without spreading bacteria or pulling and stretching the skin like a bead does. A cream exfoliator greatly reduces the chance of scarring your skin, and dries up excess sebum while stimulating new cell growth. This is important for all ages and types of skin. Just remember to buy a cream with a low acid content such as 10 percent, and to pick an acid that you are not allergic to (personally I like glycolic acid). Don’t stress your skins’ renewal process, just stimulate it!

Well, I’ve exposed Julia’s secret for fantastically, fresh skin!  You don’t have to feel envious anymore! Now the only product that will be on your face is glowing confidence!  That’s worth a smile, isn’t it?!

Stay Sweet Ladies,

Lara
